Over the summer months, we trialled out ‘Summer Working Hours’, which meant, every other Friday, the team finished at 1 p.m. This initiative, proposed by our Management Team, aimed to enhance our team’s work-life balance, by giving them the opportunity to enjoy the unpredictable British summer, whether through pursuing hobbies, spending time with family or simply relaxing.
After collating internal feedback, we were pleased to discover that the initiative had a positive impact in several key areas:
- Boost to Wellbeing: Employees reported that the early finishes significantly reduced stress, improved mental wellbeing and increased job satisfaction. One team member noted, “It’s been a great mental health boost through the week, knowing there’s something nice at the end of it. It’s really helped me with stress and general well-being.” Another shared, “Having more free time has been extremely beneficial and has lifted my morale during the week.”
- Smooth Business Operations: Despite the early finishes, business operations continued smoothly. Through careful planning and resource management, the team were able to enjoy the extra half-day without compromising our high level of service. When tasks or meetings extended beyond the early finish, team members adjusted their schedules accordingly. Overall, the initiative did not result in a significant increase in out-of-hours work or disruption.
- Positive Client Feedback: Our clients and industry colleagues have praised the initiative, with many expressing appreciation for this approach to work-life balance and employee wellbeing.
- A Valued Perk: While bonuses and other benefits are of course important, many employees highlighted the Summer Working Hours as a key factor in improving work-life balance and job satisfaction. One employee remarked, “It’s one of the best benefits we have at MESH. It’s a unique selling point, that sets us apart in the marketplace.”
Management are now reviewing how this can be integrated as a permanent working pattern. As always, we are committed to continually enhancing employee satisfaction and exploring innovative ways to support our team.
“I was sceptical about how this would work in practice and whether it would mean Monday to Thursday becomes a challenge. However, I was pleasantly surprised with how all 33 of our team managed their workload and the extended weekends did increase morale and productivity, noticeably on a Friday morning! Following the trial, it’s certainly something that we are considering how to integrate on a permanent whilst finding a balance throughout the year.”
